The best advice I ever got during MS4 was that your only job during your dermatology rotation is to be a normal person. It's not to be smart or impress anyone or be eager or anything else. The thinking is that they could reapply dermatology or choose to continue medicine at their home program. Some people only rank dermatology programs, which means that they can SOAP into another specialty like family medicine, internal medicine, psychiatry, and so on. This is obviously riskier since you’re relying on SOAP, but I imagine most ...Med student interested in applying derm for reasons outside of cosmetic derm and the lifestyle appeal (although don't hate the thought of either)…If you're asking if you can match derm just based on just grades, scores, volunteerism, and leadership in your school's interest group, the answer is most likely no because every other applicant has those things plus research experiences. You'll need something else to compete. It depends on your perspective. Which is less competitive is easy. Pathology is much easier to get into than dermatology. Then you can specialize into dermatopathology.

Some attendings give Honors pretty easily, while others will rarely give anything higher than High Pass. Because of this, my rotation grades are all a mix of Honors and High Pass. Surgery HP. Family Medicine H. Emergency Medicine HP. Pediatrics HP. Internal Medicine H. and I expect the same to continue for the next few rotations. All of these things matter in that decision. I would say typically people do 2-3ish. I would submit ASAP. Some places fill up very quickly! And I would apply to 2-3 per month you are looking at doing an away. On Friday, I successfully matched in Dermatology. I think the point is that programs need a way to evaluate your academic ability. They need residents who are able to pass the boards. Derm boards are difficult and people fail every year.My practice tests have me anywhere from a 225-240, with the reddit predictor website putting me at a 237-238. Also, you're already doing virtual interviews this year, so your ability to gauge programs is super limited...why not go to the open houses and use them as your opportunity to actually get to know programs (as much as its possible virtually)Matched well in the end with no research year. If you actually want to do research and can convey that, you will match to a 2+2 without a derm research year; it is a very small applicant pool that wants to do that, truly. Take a look at the NRMP Program Directors Survey to get an idea of some of the numbers (it's a very small sample size, but it's what we have to work with other than anecdotal evidence). 71% of the respondents said Step 2 is not required to extend an interview invite, which means there are at least a few programs that require a Step 2 score to extend an interview invite (if you believe the survey). The only data I have to review is step 2 following a strong step 1. 250's should be fine, high enough to avoid getting screened out anywhere. Strong work! The average step 2 score on the updated charting outcomes is a 257 for matched MD applicants. I would think as long as you're around there you should be good.
